Female Friendships: A Love Story For The Ages

TV Series Review: Sex and the City

Throwback to a series that I binged back in 2024 - which has been showing on Netflix. A major #throwback to the late 90s.

When smart phones didn't exist.

Maybe life was simpler.

I thought it would be one of those trashy series where people just slept around and that was all there was to it.

But it turned out otherwise.

I was surprised that they touched on pretty relevant topics.
  • Of being a single woman in her 30s.
  • Of searching for genuine and long-term connection.
  • Of being in society and withstanding the pressure and expectations of society of women.
**

How 4 women can be living in the same city, doing different jobs and living different lives. How the series dealt with the the women all having different values, priorities and worldview - who may or may not like or accept each other's choices and lifestyles, yet they chose to love and journey together anyway.

Each of their journeys looked different from each other.

Each of them dealt with different issues.

One who dreamt of getting married. Then discovered that marriage was not as blissful as she thought - where issues within the marriage couldn't be solved by her alone, and having to deal with her in-laws. Then finding a gem amidst the chaos. Changing her religion for the sake of her future - and sticking with it, and finding happiness thereafter. To dealing with the struggle of not being able to have a baby, and looking into adoption.

One who was brilliant, successful and thriving in her job, but kept looking for meaning and identity in her relationships. She had many great options but did she really pick the right one?

One who found someone to be with - but it was the wrong time. She decided to keep the baby. Then they decided to make it work. To move to another location, far from all that she has known, that would be able to accommodate the whole family. With a dog, and a cat, and her mother-in-law.

One who thought she wouldn't never find it in herself to settle down, yet found someone who was willing to stick it through thick and thin with her. Her journey of finding herself again after a cancer scare, was pretty inspiring too.

But most importantly. The series reminded me of the importance of friendships.

How 4 women can be living in the same city, doing different jobs and living different lives.

But yet finding the time to catch up regularly as a group of 4, or sometimes in pairs.

Just to talk about the things that has been happening in their lives.

To pick up the phone to call and update each other about something that happened on that day.

Of having a support system who will be there for you through the thick and thin.

****

You may not agree with every choice that your friends make, and you might even think that they are making a mistake, but that does not stop you from being there for them even as they live in their consequences of their choice.

You always make up and say your sorries, because these are people who would be with you through the ups and the downs of life.

Regardless of location, jobs, relationships.

And that - is a love story for the ages.
